Doors

The Bureau says

Passage between rooms is granted on presentation of sufficient certificates from the floor in question. The doors check.

In plain language

Each floor is a department of two to six rooms off one hallway. The first room is open when you arrive. Every other door opens once you hold a set number of certificates from that floor, and every door on a floor is open before its elevator is.

The doors are listed above the room you are in:

  • the room you are in shows your count there;
  • an open door says Enter;
  • a locked door says Opens at and the number it needs;
  • a door that says Being furnished leads to a room that is not built yet.

Your File lists the same doors, each with a bar of how much of the room you hold, and Walk to it.

Walking between open rooms is free and instant. Your pockets come with you; see Carrying, putting down and pockets. Walking through a door is not looking away.

Once a door is open it stays open.

At some doors the Bureau may tell you that you are behind another Applicant in the queue for the room. They are not in it. The queue is a formality.
