Standing still, and looking away

The Bureau says

Inactivity is a form of activity and is recorded as such. Absence from the page is also recorded.

In plain language

Doing nothing counts as doing something.

Standing still means leaving the room alone with the page open in front of you: no taps, no holds, no walking. The room notices after a while, and again after a longer while. Anything you do in the room starts the stillness over. Moving the pointer around does not.

Looking away means the page is out of sight while the room is open: you switched to another tab or another app, locked your phone, or closed the page. When you come back, the room is told how long you were gone. Closing the page and returning days later still counts as coming back.

These do not count as looking away:

  • walking through a door to another room;
  • reloading the page, or leaving it for only a few seconds.

The two do not overlap. Stillness is only measured while the page is in view, so looking away interrupts it.

You do not need to do either on purpose to play. But the building is paying attention when you are not.
