Surfaces

The Bureau says

Certain rooms are furnished with a surface. A surface holds one article. The Bureau accepts no responsibility for the article.

In plain language

A few rooms have a surface: somewhere a thing can be left and found again. The furniture itself does not move, and things cannot be left just anywhere. Only surfaces hold them.

  • With something in hand, tap an empty surface to leave it there.
  • With your hand empty, tap the surface to take back what is on it.
  • A surface holds one thing. If it is already holding something, take that first.

The room lists what you have left in it, under Left in this room. What you leave usually stays where you left it while you go elsewhere. Usually.

A few surfaces are not yours alone. What is left on one of those may be taken by the next Applicant who comes along, and you may find something on it that somebody else left. See Traces.

If you only want to be rid of a thing, Put down is simpler: it goes back to where it came from. See Carrying, putting down and pockets.
