Tapping and holding

The Bureau says

Applicants may apply pressure to any fixture in a room, briefly or at length. Each application is recorded.

In plain language

A room is a drawing you can touch. Most things in it answer to two acts:

  • Tap: a quick tap with a finger, or a click.
  • Hold: press and keep your finger or mouse button down for about half a second, until it registers.

They are different acts, and a thing may do something different for each. Things change as you touch them, so a thing may not answer the same way twice, and what one thing is doing can matter to another.

Every act gets a remark from the Bureau, in the box beside the room. Read them. The Bureau is occasionally more forthcoming than it intends to be.

On a keyboard, move to a thing with the Tab key and press Enter or Space to tap it. Hold Shift as well to hold it.

The room needs JavaScript. If the Bureau cannot be reached, the remark says so and the act is not recorded. If you tap faster than any person could, the Bureau asks you to slow down. It cannot stamp that quickly.

When you have something in hand, tapping or holding a thing uses what you carry on it. See Carrying, putting down and pockets.
